Canadian Citizenship

If you are a permanent resident (PR), you can apply for citizenship only if you meet certain requirements.

Under the current law, you must have been present in Canada as a permanent resident for at least3 years or a total of 1,095days during the 5 years immediately BEFORE the date of your application.

You also must be present for at least6.5 months or183 days every year for 4 years with in the last 6 years immediately BEFORE the date of the application.

If you have not left Canada in 5 years and have PR status, you do not need to count how many days you have been in Canada before applying for Citizenship.

These requirements do not apply to children under the age of 18.

Along with the residency requirement, there are also strict requirements regarding income tax filing, the fluency of English or French, a Canadian knowledge test, and possible residency questionnaires.

  • Tips for Citizenship:
  1. You must be in Canada for 3 out of 5 years before applying.

  2. Each day that you are in Canada as an authorized temporary resident counts as one half-day, with a maximum of 365 days.

  3. You get all the rights of a citizen and you don’t have to meet the obligations of permanent residency.

  4. Be aware that even though Canada accepts dual citizenship, some countries do not.
